About Bilbao

It could be said that the Basque Country, an autonomous community of the Spanish state, is at the forefront of renewable energies and has a solid business and industrial fabric. Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay, is a modern city of great importance in the core of renewable energies; a clear example of this is the location of the headquarters of Iberdrola and Siemens Gamesa in the same city. In addition, the port of Bilbao has become a Decarbonisation Hub due to the strong commitment made over the last two years to the hydrogen technology sector. The port also wants to become a continental production and distribution centre for hydrogen and synthetic fuels with Petronor, subsidiary of the Repsol group, which is leading the Basque Hydrogen Corridor. The BH2C, Basque Hydrogen Corridor, is a project shared by public and private organizations in the Basque Country which is led by José Ignacio Zudaire, director of the Petronor oil company from the Repsol group.
The Basque Hydrogen Corridor Association (BH2C) aims to promote hydrogen as an energy industry. The objective is to create a hydrogen ecosystem in the Basque Country to develop projects and advance in the decarbonization of the economy, becoming a region of zero net emissions by 2050, while maintaining the weight of the Basque industrial sector in the economy. The industrial sector in the Basque Country accounts for a considerable part of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, with sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as steel, glass, and cement, which emit large quantities of CO2.

The projects in the corridor include, on the one hand, the production of green hydrogen at the Petronor refinery, a subsidiary of Repsol, in Muskiz, Vizcaya, which has a 2.5 MW electrolyzer with a capacity of 2.5 MW. In addition, less than one kilometer from the refinery, the Abanto technology park is being built, which is closely linked to H2 and its technologies, where there will be a logistics centre for conditioning and storage, as well as a hydrogen plant that will dispense at 350 bar and 700 bar.
On the other hand, Petronor, the Ente Vasco de la Energía and Enagas will participate in the installation of a 10 MW electrolyser in the Port of Bilbao for the synthetic fuels plant.
In turn, by 2025, an electrolyser of up to 100 MW will be developed to address Petronor’s decarbonization process and feed the needs of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor itself.
The Basque Hydrogen Corridor, BH2C, is an internationally significant initiative that has received the H2Valley of the Year Award from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.

Zubizuri bridge: It was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and sought to promote the rebirth of an area of Bilbao after the decline of a fundamental industry for the city, the maritime industry. The layout of the bridge also sought, logically, to facilitate pedestrian communication between two sectors of the population.
